Aly Bear

Alyson (Aly) Bear is a Dakota woman, lawyer, and leader from Whitecap Dakota Nation, and the host and creative lead of Beyond Colonial Borders.

Knowledge and lived experience

Aly’s background in law, leadership, and Indigenous governance means she understands many of the issues on this show from a professional perspective. Just as important is her lived experience as an Indigenous woman. Conversations about identity, family, community, colonial systems, and finding our way within them are things she understands personally.

That combination lets her relate to guests beyond their professional titles, so a conversation can be raw, relatable, and personal while still taking on complex subjects.

Her experience is not everyone’s experience. Every person, family, community, and Nation carries a different story.

Her role on the show

Aly helps choose guests and topics, prepares for each interview, and leads the conversations. Whether she is sitting with an Elder, a guest from another Nation, or someone from a very different walk of life, her job is to bring her knowledge to the table while leaving room for people to tell their own story.
